Ahoi Ashtami Puja at home – Mother worshipping Maa Ahoi for children’s long life

Ahoi Ashtami Ki Katha: Why Mothers Celebrate This Auspicious Fast for Their Children’s Long Life

Ahoi Ashtami is one of the most sacred festivals in Hindu tradition, celebrated by mothers across India for the long life, happiness, and prosperity of their children. It falls on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik (usually in October or November). On this day, women observe a nirjala vrat (fast without water) and worship Maa Ahoi, a divine form of Goddess Parvati, with deep faith and devotion.

🌸 Significance of Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami Puja at home – Mother worshipping Maa Ahoi for children’s long life

The festival of Ahoi Ashtami beautifully expresses the selfless love of a mother. It is believed that Maa Ahoi listens to the prayers of every mother who fasts sincerely on this day. The vrat brings blessings for healthy, long-living, and prosperous children.

Just as Karva Chauth symbolizes the bond between husband and wife, Ahoi Ashtami represents the divine connection between a mother and her child.

Mothers wake up early, clean their homes, and draw or decorate the image of Maa Ahoi on a wall, often with seven stars or seven sons symbolizing children.

🪔 Ahoi Ashtami Ki Katha (The Story Behind the Fast)

Maa Ahoi blessing mother and children on Ahoi Ashtami – Symbol of protection and prosperity

Long ago, in a small village, there lived a kind-hearted woman who had seven sons. One day, before Diwali, she went to the forest to dig some soil for her home. While digging, her spade accidentally injured the cub of a lion (or in some versions, a hedgehog), and the cub died.

Feeling guilty and heartbroken, she returned home. But soon after that incident, all her seven sons died one by one. The woman was devastated and realized that her misfortune was the result of the sin she had unknowingly committed.

She prayed earnestly to Maa Ahoi for forgiveness. Pleased by her sincere repentance, Maa Ahoi blessed her and advised her to observe a vrat (fast) on the Ashtami of Kartik Krishna Paksha every year.

When the woman observed the fast and worshipped Maa Ahoi with full devotion, her sons were miraculously revived. Since then, mothers have been observing this vrat to seek Maa Ahoi’s blessings for their children’s safety and longevity.
